Farnham Maltings

The speaker this year will be Anna Pavord, a gardening writer whose book  ‘Landskipping’ about the British landscape ( ‘a splendid patchwork of history, nature writing, polemic and memoir’ – Sunday Telegraph) has a chapter on Cobbett.  She is an experienced speaker who has been Gardening Correspondent for the Independent and wrote for the Observer for 20 years. She presented a 10 part TV series on Channel 4 and was awarded a Gold Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1991. She was the guest on Desert Island Discs late last year (Nov 2017).

July 1st, 2018 – Rural Ride

Following on from last years superb ride to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the great Hampshire petition with Richard Hinxman, we thought we would stay closer to home and will be following a really superb ride planned by Molly Townsend almost 30 years ago.

Our first stop will be for coffee in the new premises at Gilbert White’s house in Selborne. This part of the ride follows in the steps of William Cobbett, who rode by in August 1823 when he had some very interesting comments to make on the family who lived in Rotherfield Park. The same family is there today and the Society has been very kindly invited by Sir James Scott Bt., to visit the house and gardens, very rarely opened to the public . We shall do this after leaving Selborne. From here we will move eastwards and arrive at the superb Petworth House (the subject of many words by Cobbett) for lunch and a cream tea before returning to Farnham.

Full details, including costs, will be sent shortly by mail and updates will be available on the website
